The Future of Automated Compounding was held in the Puro Hotel, Łódź on 8-9 June 2024, attended by pharmacists from all over Poland.

Ian Lindsley’s presentation focused on the EBN white paper on ‘Preventing contamination, exposure and health impacts for workers from hazardous medicinal products (HMPs) at work by the implementation of closed systems in their manufacture and use’. The white paper was published on 5 April 2024, the date on which all EU Member States, including Poland, must have transposed the EU legislative changes in the CMRD from 2022 into national law.

He spoke about other measures to prevent exposure of healthcare workers and the ETUI list of HMPs, co-authored by Ian Lindsley, and the only list utilising the 2022 EU definition of HMPs which is also included in the 2023 EU guidelines.

The conference heard from Marcin Bicz and Wioletta Kaliszan from the University Clinical Centre in Gdańsk, the main teaching hospital at the Medical University of Gdańsk, which is currently using the Mundus mini HD robot and trialling automated compounding. Emanuele Barbieri from Swisslog Healthcare talked about the way his organisation supports hospitals in initiating therapies quickly and reliably. This uses automated and traceable transport solutions for critical goods, such as laboratory samples and medications and the various hospital processes, from automated storage and retrieval to fully automated, patient-specific therapy preparation.

Then, Elke Martin and Judy Gershater from Equashield gave a presentation on the new Mundus midi HD and gave all the pharmacists present the opportunity to try out the new technology hands-on.  Finally, psychologist and coach Jakub Kusioriski did a number of sessions with attendees.
